Council appeals to Burnham shops to halt waste bins blocking pavements

-

Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Town Council has written to owners of shops and businesses across Burnham town centre urging them to stop placing commercial waste bins on pavements, paths and roads.

Mayor Cllr Andy Brewer’s open letter to business owners comes amid growing concern about the unsightly issue of waste bins blocking some paths, pavements and the sides of some roads.

“As part of our developing Corporate Strategy, the Town Council is committed to enhancing and improving the appearance of the town centre,” explains Cllr Brewer.

“One of the issues raised regularly by residents and visitors is the number of commercial waste bins apparently being stored either on the footpath or the highway.”

“All businesses have a legal responsibility under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and other related legislation to safely contain, store and legally dispose of any waste produced from your business.”

In the letter to businesses, the Mayor adds: “We trust we will have co-operation with this initiative by ensuring that commercial waste bins are stored appropriately without spoiling the appearance of our town.”

“The Town Council will be working with Somerset County Council, Sedgemoor District Council, Somerset Waste and the Police where enforcement is required, however we trust this will not be necessary.”

Burnham Chamber of Trade says it is giving its support to the Town Council, providing advice to businesses seeking help.
