New Works store nears in Burnham-On-Sea as council backs application

-

Town councillors have this week approved a ‘planning application’ that paves the way to The Works opening a new store in Burnham-On-Sea town centre this summer.

At a council meeting on Monday evening (August 5th), town councillors considered an application for ‘advertisement consent’ by The Works to install two signs at the proposed store at 35 The High Street, as pictured above.

The Works – which sells books, art and craft materials, gifts, toys, games and stationery – has over 500 stores across the UK.

It is set to open in a vacant premises previously occupied by New Look, as first reported here by Burnham-On-Sea.com.

Cllr Andy Brewer said at Monday’s meeting: “I had some concerns about the height of the shop’s proposed sign but the unit actually has a big fascia and it matches the size of the one next door at Greggs.” He added that although the signs will be internally illuminated there “won’t be excessive lighting.”

Cllr Nick Tolley added: “I actually like this application – it’s the sort of thing we need on our High Street, but can we put controls on the hours that the new signs will be illuminated to protect nearby residents?”  It was noted that Sedgemoor District Council has the powers to regulate the hours that shop signs are lit to reduce the impact of neighbours.

Cllr Peter Clayton and Louise Parkin said they had no objections to the plans, and the committee agreed it had no overall observations.

The unit was previously occupied by New Look, which closed in September 2018.
