EDF says new delays at French nuclear plant won’t hit schedule of Hinkley Point C

-

French energy giant EDF has this week said Hinkley Point C remains on schedule despite its flagship nuclear power project in France being further delayed by at least three years.

The company, which is building the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station near Burnham-On-Sea, says the launch of its nuclear reactor at Flamanville in Normandy has been pushed back due to problems with weldings.

The Flamanville reactor was initially due to be operational by 2012, featuring a European Pressurised Reactor, but has had repeated setbacks over the years.

EDF is now reviewing the decision from the French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN), which ordered the company to repair eight faulty welds at the plant. The energy giant, therefore, says commissioning of the nuclear plant cannot be expected before the end of 2022.

However, an EDF Energy spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Monday (July 29th): “There is no cost or schedule impact on Hinkley Point C, which remains on target, demonstrating the benefits of learning from other projects. We fully understand the issues with the welds at Flamanville and appropriate actions have been taken to ensure we do not have the same issues at Hinkley Point C.”
It is understood that the similar welds for Hinkley Point C are some years away from being required and will be undertaken by a different contractor.
