The 250th anniversary of Methodism in Brean was marked at the weekend with a special visit by a TV actor playing the legendary travelling preacher John Wesley.
A unique performance of ‘An Evening with John Wesley’ was staged at Brean Methodist Church on Saturday (July 20th).
Actor Mark Topping, who has appeared on BBC TV as John Wesley, is touring the country as the charismatic clergyman, performing in more than 175 churches and theatres.
The drama looks at Wesley’s adventurous life – including his confrontations with the drunken mobs which were frequently stirred up to disrupt his preaching.
One of the organisers. Morag Wood, said: “We enjoyed an excellent drama by the well known actor Mark Topping as John Wesley, bringing his experiences and confrontations to life!”
“The play was well attended with the audience joining in with strong hymn singing. On a warm afternoon, the ice creams and cream teas were much appreciated too! Thank you to everyone who supported our celebration of 250 years of Methodism in Brean.”
Mark Topping said: “Wesley is a fascinating character who had an extraordinary life. He had a profound effect on people’s faith and how they lived their lives. He influenced the culture of the whole country.”
“In the play I use his journal, letters and sermons to recount some of the key moments of his life. He was a gifted communicator and speaks with great charm, directness and wit.”
