Highways England has been criticised this week for the ‘dangerous’ condition of Burnham-On-Sea’s motorway junction as vegetation grows out across three quarters of the hard shoulder.
Several motorists have contacted Burnham-On-Sea.com about hedges covering large parts of the hard shoulder on the southbound entry slip at M5 junction 22, as pictured here.
“It is dangerous – the hedges are growing out so far on the final bend of the entry slip road that anyone having to drive onto the hard shoulder cannot see around the corner and could easily crash into the back of a stationery vehicle,” said motorist Jason Cox.
Talking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, Highways England’s South West Service Delivery Manager David Sledge, said: “We are aware that the hedge line at junction 22 of the M5, while it poses no risk to drivers at present, requires trimming.”
“We have been unable to access the slip road while resurfacing work is taking place on the M5 in this area.”
“However, once the resurfacing work is completed we will ensure that usual maintenance is carried out.”
