Burnham youth centre team urges sports court users to halt litter problem

-

People who use the sports courts at Burnham-On-Sea’s youth centre have this week been urged to stop leaving rubbish around the facilities.

The team at the BAY Centre in Cassis Close say they are frequently ‘disgusted’ at the large amounts of cans, wrappers, bottles, boxes and plastic left discarded around the ball courts.

The volunteers frequently spend hours of their time cleaning up the rubbish and even have to spend money getting it removed.

“The problem has become so bad that we are considering the temporary closure of the courts. People really need to take their rubbish home,” said Jan Bonus from the BAY Centre.

Burnham town councillor Dawn Carey told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are so lucky to have the ball court for our youngsters, especially with the summer coming up. It would be a shame to lose them because a few are not being respectful.”

“It’s not fair that their behaviour is costing the BAY Centre money and valuable time that could be used elsewhere.”
