Burnham-On-Sea’s MP James Heappey has paid tribute to Theresa May as she announced that she is stepping down as Prime Minister on June 7th.
Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com during a visit to Burnham on Friday morning, he said: “There can be no doubt, even amongst her greatest of detractors, that she has had to try and steer this country through extraordinarily challenging political times and I personally thank her very much for all the effort she has put in.”
“We now need a new Prime Minister – a new leader of the Conservative party – as quickly as possible so that the country can move forwards.”
He added that he has not yet decided on who to support among the candidates for the role.
In an emotional statement in Downing Street, Mrs May said she had “done my best” to honour the 2016 EU referendum result.
It would remain a matter of “deep regret” that she had been unable to deliver Brexit, she added. But she said a new PM was “in the best interests of the country”.
Mrs May said she will continue to serve as prime minister while a Conservative leadership contest takes place.
She will step down as Tory leader on 7th June and a leadership contest is due to begin the following week.
