Safety fears for proposed new Highbridge primary school raised by councillors

-

Plans for 171 new homes and a new primary school in Highbridge have this week been given a ‘thumbs down’ by town councillors.

At a meeting of the Town Council’s Planning Applications Committee on Wednesday (May 22nd), councillors raised an objection over the location of the proposed new school at the Brue Farm development on the outskirts of Highbridge.

While councillors are keen to see a new school built at the site, they feel the proposed site near to the A38 is wrong.

Committee Chairman Cllr Andy Brewer told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We have several concerns, mainly relating to the location of the planned new school. Access to the school would be directly from the main A38 road which is a concern on road safety grounds for the safety of schoolchildren and also air pollution.”

“Councillors noted that the original planned location for the new school was towards the centre of the site, on the east side of the Brue Farm development.”

He added: “We also raised concerns regarding the taller properties at the northern end of the Brue Farm development overlooking adjacent Huntspill Road properties.”

“There a couple of two-and-a-half storey properties planned there, and several residents have raised concerns about their size and overlooking.” Burnham-On-Sea.com

The final decision on the plans rest with Sedgemoor District Council, whose planning department is accepting comments on the plans (reference number 52/19/001) until May 27th, 2019. Burnham-On-Sea.com

The full application covers ‘the erection of 171 dwellings together with associated infrastructure, including provision of a roundabout and public open space and seeking outline permission with all matters reserved for the erection of a primary school.’
