Sea Cadets thank Burnham firefighters for extinguishing blaze started by barbecue

-

Burnham-On-Sea Sea Cadets have thanked firefighters for quickly extinguishing a small fire at the rear of town’s Sea Cadets Unit on Sunday afternoon (May 19th).

Two appliances from Burnham-On-Sea, along with one appliance and an aerial ladder platform from Bridgwater, were sent to Burnham Sea Cadets Unit in Cassis Close just after 4pm.

“Crews were called to reports of smoke issuing from the Sea Cadets building in Burnham,” said a fire spokesman. “On arrival the incident commander found smoke issuing from a shipping container.”

“Entry into the premises had to be made using hydraulic cutting equipment and once entry into the compound was made, crews were able to get to work using a hose reel jet and one safety jet.”

“The fire was extinguished, preventing further damage to items in the shipping container. The fire was found to be started by a barbecue that had dropped hot embers onto combustible material.”

A Burnham Sea cadets spokesman added: “Thank you all those who called 101 or 999 in response to the fire at the rear of the unit, and particular thanks to the firefighters in Burnham who put it out.”

“Initial reports suggest water and smoke damage to a storage container which appear to be relatively easily resolved.”

“The Unit Chairman and I would like to thank those volunteers and supporters who assisted with the initial reports and subsequently making the site secure.”
