Burnham resident protests the ‘death of democracy’ outside polling station

-

A Burnham-On-Sea resident held a “lone democracy protest” dressed in funeral clothes outside a polling station in the town during yesterday’s local elections.

Shazwellyn Lewis sat outside the Avenue Tennis Club in Burnham’s The Grove where voters headed to a polling station to cast their votes in the district and town council elections.

Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, Shaz said: “I was there in my funeral attire for much of the day to hold a peaceful demonstration, protesting that democracy is dead because the result of the referendum has not been delivered.”

“Whether people voted to leave or remain, we’ve all been betrayed and there has been a total loss of democracy.”

Shaz added: “I had lots of positive reactions and support.”

“Some voters gave me puzzled looks as they walked by but many, many people were hugely supportive.”

“People told me how fed up they are about the betrayal of the electorate.”

Shaz, who lives in Burnham, says she is a member of the new Brexit Party and is supporting it locally during the run-up to the EU elections on May 23rd.
