Beach walker injured in fall on Burnham beach helped by Coastguards and BARB

-

A lady was taken to hospital after suffering a suspected broken knee in a freak accident on Burnham-On-Sea beach on Bank Holiday Monday.

The lady, who was a member of a family on a day trip from Worcester, had fallen on the hard sand at the top of the beach near Maddock’s Slade and suffered a knee injury.

Crews from Burnham Coastguard, BARB Search & Rescue and South Western Ambulance were called to the beach at 2.10pm, as pictured here.

A Coastguard spokesman added: “Hurting with her knee, she was unable to walk due to it being too painful. Her family dialled 999 and asked for an ambulance who in turn requested our team for extraction assistance as it was on the beach and thought to be in the mud, plus their own Hazardous Area response Team (HART) were tasked.”

“Once on scene our team assessed the lady’s condition and made her as comfortable as possible until the ambulance arrived. BARB Search & Rescue have a multi-terrain vehicle so we tasked them to assist so we could move the lady quickly to the top of the beach for transfer to the ambulance that was arriving on scene.”

“Once the lady had been transferred to the Ambulance we were happy that there was no more to do and we could return to station.”

“As reports were that the person was in the mud we also had our flank team from Weston-Super-Mare Coastguard en-route who were diverted from their local patrol. As they arrived, the Officer In Charge was happy that there was no need for them however there were two children making their way down to the water through the mud, so along with one of the Burnham team they were asked to keep an eye on them from a vantage point on the sea wall and they were happy that the two were not stuck and they had turned around and headed back once it got a bit sticky.”

A BARB spokesman said: “Our crews were called out to help Coastguards and ambulance crews attending a person in difficulty on Burnham Beach near Maddock’s Slade. She had tripped while walking along the hard sand at the top of the beach and suffered a nasty knee injury.”

“BARB’s crews assisted the paramedics and Coastguards in safely loading the casualty onto a stretcher before she was taken onto our waiting Polaris – multi-terrain vehicle and driven up onto the Esplanade where a waiting ambulance took her to hospital.”

“This was another good multi-agency incident with a positive outcome. We wish the lady a speedy recovery.”
