Burnham-On-Sea tennis players compete in Easter mixed doubles tennis contest

-

A unique mixed doubles tennis competition took place in Burnham-On-Sea on Sunday (April 14th) which saw all the competitors play with a different partner for every match.

The latest fun competition, run by Ian Howard and called ‘Ian’s Sunday Service’, took place at the Avenue Tennis Club in Burnham and organisers say there was a great turnout.

All the players play with a different partner for every match of four service games, which over the two hours of play, generally means that players get to play with everyone at least once. With Ian’s scoring algorithm, there is almost always a new winner of his hand crafted wood turnings.

The winners of hand-crafted Oak Easter Eggs were Lynn O’Dell and Steve Smith, pictured below.

“All are welcome to come along and join in, here’s no need to be a member of the club, although there is a small donation to play which goes to charity supporting research in Prostrate Cancer,” says a spokesman.

Meanwhile, the club will play host to Junior County Matches over the May Bank Holiday weekend when some great tennis will be played.

Coach Vinny Duddy said: “Some of these kids are fantastic and the standard of play and competition is very high. It’s not a bad way to spend a few hours watching some sport and perhaps enjoying the facilities and bar at the Avenue Tennis Club.”

The club has a month’s free membership offer available for anyone who wants to give tennis a go and who wants to get an insight into the club before joining.

Qualified coaches provide coaching throughout the week for all ages and abilities.

Membership of the club allows users access to play on one of the 8 floodlit courts (4 Astra turfed and 4 Tarmacadan), together with access to the super clubhouse with a well-stocked bar, wi-fi and changing facilities.

The club has organised social and competitive tennis throughout the week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, together with a variety of subsidised coaching sessions for juniors and adults and ‘Vinny Minis’ on a Friday evening – free to junior members, ladies and men’s teams that compete in the North Somerset Tennis Leagues.

As well as tennis, the club runs a number of other social events including barbecues, Wednesday evening suppers, and a variety of other lunches and events.
