60 year-old plastic washing-up liquid bottle washes up on Brean beach

-

A plastic washing-up liquid bottle produced more than 60 years ago has washed up on Brean beach this week.

Burnham-On-Sea.com reader Stephen Fox has described his shock at finding the latest example of pollution washed up on the high tideline.

The Doby bottle dates to the mid-1950s but it is not known how long it has been in the sea.

The Museum of Plastic Design at the University of Bournemouth has a bottle in its collection dating back to the mid-1950s.

Stephen Fox said: “I was doing a beach clean and I was dismayed by how much plastic there was on Brean beach.”

“I found this bottle. I thought it may be old and a quick Google search confirms it’s from the 50’s or 60’s!”

The weathered bottle has the words: “Doby washing up liquid” and a Royal crest.

The discovery comes after Burnham-On-Sea.com reported in October 2018 that a 47 year-old plastic washing-up bottle had washed up on Brean beach.

Regular beach cleans are held in Burnham-On-Sea, Brean and Berrow to remove large amounts of plastic rubbish being washed up.
