Over £2,600 has been raised for community group BIARS, which runs Burnham-On-Sea’s tourist information centre, and the town’s Rotary Club during a special fundraising evening.

Saturday’s event at The Oaktree was jointly organised with Burnham-On-Sea’s Rotary Club and was well attended by scores of supporters, as pictured here.

The event featured musical entertainment from the 1960s-style pop group Monopole as well as a raffle and auction plus two fun race horse events.

Tom Ashton, Chair of BIARS, said: “The final figure is not totally clear, as auction monies and some advertising monies have still to be collected, but the profit to be split between Rotary and BIARS is over £2,600 and I hope the final figure will be closer to £2,800.”

“It’s an amazing result, well above expectations and it is very important to BIARS which has been run as a community volunteer group for nearly eight years. We mostly depend on advertisements from attractions and accommodation providers, plus fundraising to allow us to keep providing the vital information we give. Over 60% of people visiting our tourism centre are local residents.”

He added: “I must give thanks to all the people and organisations who gave raffle prizes, auction items and supported the event in their hundreds. Two people who particularly stand out for the hours they put in to make this fundraiser such a success are Margaret Fielder for BIARS who collected over 70 raffle items and organised the giving out of the raffle prizes and for Rotary’s Vice President, Chris Ashton, who co-ordinated the event, arranging the entertainment, organising the venue and collecting the bulk of the 17 auction items.”
