Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards have this week issued a new warning about the dangers of playing ‘chicken’ by dodging waves after these two youngsters were seen during Storm Freya on Sunday evening (March 3rd).
The youngsters were seen dodging in and out of the waves along Burnham’s South Esplanade sea wall at high tide for over five minutes.
As shown in this video, one of the youngsters stumbles and loses his footing during one of the waves before running to safety.
Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards were alerted. Although the two youngsters had safely left the scene, the scare has prompted a fresh safety warning.
Dave Welland, Burnham-On-Sea Coastguard station officer, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Anyone doing this needs to know that they are putting themselves in danger. They could easily slip and get pulled into the sea.”
“There is often debris in the waves and people can easily be dragged into the water by the under-tow.”
“What might look a harmless, fun activity is incredibly dangerous and we would urge people not to put themselves in danger.”
