A horse riding centre near Burnham-On-Sea has lifted its ‘lockdown’ that was put in place at the weekend amid concerns about the ongoing equine flu outbreak across the country.
Alstone Court in Alstone, Highbridge announced the decision on Saturday as a precaution to keep its horses healthy as the flu outbreak effects horses elsewhere.
But an Alstone Court spokeswoman said on Tuesday (February 12th): “After speaking to our vets this morning regarding the equine flu, we are now out of lockdown, but any horse coming onto the yard for either lessons or livery will need to be vaccinated. We shall be checking passports before any horse is unloaded.”
At the weekend the centre had said that due to equine flu “being confirmed in the southwest and getting closer to us,” it had decided to put the yard on to lockdown.
However, lessons have still been running as normal through the period.
“We would much rather our horses stay healthy and err on the side of caution, rather than potentially become ill. The welfare of our horses is the most important thing to us.”
Another local horse riding facility, Badgworth Arena, has decided as a precaution to cancel its shows until further notice. That continues to be in place.
