Burnham-On-Sea’s In Charley’s Memory is among the local community groups and organisations to benefit from the fifth and sixth rounds of grants recently awarded from the Hinkley Point C Community Fund Small Grants Programme, it has been announced this week.
The fund, managed by Somerset Community Foundation, helps community projects that mitigate the impacts and increase the opportunities of the Hinkley Point C project.
The groups to benefit from the recent grant funding and a summary of their projects are:
- In Charley’s Memory will conduct outreach work for mental health support work in and around the Bridgwater area, rolling out counselling services in response to demand. Grant received: £10,000.
- C.L.O.W.N.S. plans a series of weekly parent and child sessions will be delivered across Stogursey, Kilve, Holford, Williton, Stogumber, and Cannington. The sessions will encourage rurally isolated parents to support each other. Grant received: £5,000.
- Fiddington Parish Council plans the installation of a local defibrillator and community awareness training, offering a lifeline in a location not easily reached by emergency services. Grant received: £5,000.
- Live Naturally supports the provision of a trampoline club in Hamp and increase access to healthy eating courses, promoting community cohesion and increased quality of life around Bridgwater. Grant received: £2,498.
- Over Stowey Village Hall and Recreation Ground will get new kitchen equipment for the village hall, improving local community facilities. Grant agreed: £3,600.
- Quantock Players’s grant is for lighting equipment for the theatre group, improving its production quality for the local community. Grant received £1,589.
- Samaritans of Taunton and Somerset funding will support a three-year community outreach project based in Sedgemoor, Taunton Deane and West Somerset, supporting potentially vulnerable local people. Grant received: £10,000.
- Sir William Godolphin’s Regiment of Foote’s funding will support a local history curriculum in schools and a re-enactment of the Battle of Sedgemoor, which will take place in Bridgwater in 2020. This work will promote community cohesion and the appreciation of local history. Grant received: £5,000.
- SPARC Sport CIC’s grant will support community cohesion in impacted communities around Bridgwater, Highbridge, Wilstock and Stockmoor through sport and a focus on youth services. Grant received: £2,850.
- Spaxton Village Hall’s grant will support the installation of a new outdoor community gym in Spaxton. Grant received: £1,907.
- Stockland Bristol Parish Meeting – a community defibrillator and training resource pack for local volunteers will be purchased, offering a lifeline in a location not easily reached by emergency services. Grant received: £3,539.

In Charley’s Memory was set up after Burnham-On-Sea teenager Charley Marks took his own life, aged 18, in 2014 and the charity supports and helps young people affected by mental health issues.
