Highbridge’s new Proper Job DIY store has got off to a busy start after opening this week.

As first reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com, the new store off Southwell Crescent in Highbridge opened in place of the town’s former Co-Op supermarket.

Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, Proper Job store manager Peter Tilley said: “It’s been a very busy first few days – we have had lots of interest from customers and sales exceeded expectations.”

“We are offering a full range of 7,000 products – which range from tools and hardware to decorating, car care, gardening, electrical, household, cleaning and toiletries, plus stationery and seasonal items and snacks.”

“The store has opened after a £200,000 refurbishment that includes new decor, racking, lighting and car park changes. A new security system with 43 cameras around the store has also been introduced.”

He added that the store has had three staff transfer from other stores while five new staff have been recruited initially with a plan to take on more in the longer term.

“It’s been a good few days of business since we opened in the middle of the week. We are delighted to be open after a busy few weeks.

Proper Job’s opening at the site comes after the Highbridge Co-Op supermarket shut down in October 2018, as pictured below.

Highbridge Chairman of Trade Mike Murphy says the opening is “great news” for the town. He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The news of Highbridge being chosen for the 16th UK Proper Job superstore is yet another confirmation that the town has reached the turning point in its fortunes.”

“Proper Job represents another new destination for major area footfall into Highbridge.”

Proper Job says there are no plans to make changes to its popular Burnham-On-Sea town centre store, which is located in Adam Street.

Peter confirmed: “I’m keen to reiterate our support for the Burnham store – there are no plans to scale back or close the branch there.”
