High tides wash up wave of beach rubbish at Berrow… including this unusual find!

-

High tides over the past week have washed up large amounts of new rubbish along the coastlines of Burnham-On-Sea, Berrow and Brean – and beach clean volunteers even found this wooden drawer among the items!

The piece of furniture was washed up on the beach near Berrow Church during the weekend’s stormy high tides.

While the hard-working team at The Friends of Berrow Beach meet monthly to collect rubbish washed up along the beach, its members also carry out extra cleans when necessary.

Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com on Sunday, the group’s Nigel Hoy said: “The wooden drawer was found by one of our Friends of Berrow Beach team during a walk along Berrow Beach on Saturday. We haven’t encountered anything like this before so it was a bit of a surprise!”

“That said, being made of wood, it isn’t as harmful to the environment as some other items we have found recently and which mostly consist of plastic and metal. These have included several syringes, plastic bottles and bottle tops, sweet and crisp wrappers, fishing hooks and nylon rope – a lot of which has appeared on our recent high tides.”

He added: “Not only do our group hold formal beach cleans on the second Saturday of every month, when everyone is invited, but our team also go out on impromptu cleans around the Berrow neighbourhood, whenever we spot an area that needs a bit of a clean up.”

“We feel this is important, as local people can see what we are doing and many have expressed their gratitude for what we’re doing. Furthermore, some have even asked how they can also get involved.”

The group is also supporting the Daily Mail’s Great British Spring Clean campaign, which is going to run from 22nd March to 23rd April 2019.

Nigel added: “We would like as many people as possible in Highbridge, Burnham-On-Sea, Berrow and Brean to take part.”

“We hope it may also encourage local residents to set up and run clean ups in their own local neighbourhoods. That said, we have found that once litter picking is started, it does tend to get quite addictive, so please be warned!”

The Berrow group is led by Honour Greenslade and Sue Meads with the support of Litter Free Coast and Sea Somerset’s Tanya Cox.
