Power cut briefly hits 4,300 homes across Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge

-

Over 4,000 homes across Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge were briefly plunged into darkness on Tuesday evening (January 8th) during a power cut which followed an accident on the outskirts of the town.

Talking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, a spokesman for Western Power Distribution said: “We initially saw 4,340 customers lose power shortly after 6.20pm due to a cable fault.”

“Power was quickly restored to 3,643 customers in a matter of seconds, with others following, and 163 homes were reconnected later.”

Tesco in Burnham-On-Sea closed its store for 30 minutes from around 6.45pm soon after the power cut to allow its cash tills to reboot.

The outage came after an accident on the A38 next to the Edithmead M5 junction 22 roundabout in which a lamp post was damaged by fire, as pictured above.

Police partially closed the A38 during the rush hour while emergency services were at the scene.

Western Power said that properties affected were across the two towns and apologised for the disruption.
