Burnham-On-Sea and Berrow churchgoers collect 88 giftboxes for seafarers

-

Kind-hearted members from churches and groups in Burnham-On-Sea in Berrow have packed dozens of shoeboxes full of gifts for the Mission to Seafarers at Portbury Dock.

A total of 88 shoeboxes have been filled with gifts donated for seafarers far from home.

Members of congregations in the Burnham-On-Sea area have been filling the boxes over the last few weeks.

Members of St. Andrew’s Church in Burnham, St Mary’s Church at Berrow and the BoS Trefoil Guild took carloads of shoeboxes and many knitted hats, mufflers and items of clothing to the Port of Bristol Seafarer centre at Portbury on Monday.

Liz Roost, Mission to Seafarers representative at St. Andrew’s Church, said: “The Christmas shoeboxes were filled with chocolate and sweets , games as well as useful items like toiletries, mugs and small warm items of clothing and a Christmas card helps to show they are not forgotten. They were greatly appreciated.”

“Seafarers face daily challenges at sea working far from home often for months on end. These seafarers are supported by many such missions around the world and the Portbury Mission is our local one.”

“The seafarers are of all faiths and none find a welcome at the Seafarer centre and are offered the hand of friendship , care and support in times of need when far from their families.”
