A plastic Collie dog placed on a plate of wobbling jelly has won top honours in this year’s Somerset spoof art awards to claim the Turnip Prize.
Now in its 19th year, the award goes to someone who has “created something that they perceive to be crap art using the least amount of effort possible”.
“Colly Wobbles” by David Summers Cooke was revealed as the winner in Wedmore on Tuesday evening (December 4th).
David, pictured, who is recovering from an eye operation this week, told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the idea for his winning entry had come “in a flash of brilliance.” It is the second time he has won, the last time being in 2014.
Organiser Trevor Prideaux said he was “delighted with the lack of effort taken to create this work”.
This year’s award attracted 90 entries, and Mr Prideaux said that Collywobbles “will be remembered in art history for no time at all”.
The Turnip Prize started in 1999 as a response to Tracy Emin’s unmade bed, which was exhibited at the Tate Gallery that year.
David added: “The Turner Prize has become so ridiculous – this is a light-hearted, fun way of putting two fingers up at it!”
Winners of the competition, organised by Wedmore’s New Inn, receive an actual turnip attached to a wooden base.
