Colourful bunting could be set to return to Burnham-On-Sea town centre next year after councillors this week gave their support to plans to brighten up the High Street.
Bunting was last displayed in the town centre during 2015 using funding from the ‘Tesco 106’ project, but it was removed before the carnival procession that year due to the risk of damage and has not returned since.
Burnham and Highbridge Town Council Clerk Tatiana Cant said at a meeting on Wednesday evening (November 14th): “It would be good to reinstate bunting to make the town centre more vibrant, attractive and welcoming during the summer months.”
“Burnham Chamber of Trade has requested that the Town Council consider providing bunting again in the town centre.”
The council’s Town Projects committee members supported a proposal to re-use material from left over flags and fabric from a local craft shop for the bunting, which would mean plastic would not be used, in line with the council’s plastic-free initiative.
Cllr Janet Keen said: “Anything that can be done to enhance or improve our High Street should be done. This is a well thought-out proposal.”
Councillors are considering whether the bunting could be strung between hanging basket columns along the High Street or across streets.
A final decision is set to be made over the next few months, before the 2019 tourist season.
