Photos & Video: Burnham-On-Sea honours its war dead with Remembrance parade and ceremony

Hundreds of people attended Burnham-On-Sea’s Remembrance Day ceremony to honour those local people who have died in conflicts.

This year’s event took on extra significance on the 100th anniversary of WW1, with an emotional ceremony next to the town’s War Memorial.

A parade took place beforehand through Burham’s town centre, featuring hundreds of residents of all ages from local community groups and members of the armed services.

Led by the Mayor Cllr Bill Hancock, the parade marched from Burnham’s Pier Street car park along the High Street to the War Memorial in Love Lane.

Sunday’s remembrance ceremony was watched by a record turnout of residents besides the town’s War Memorial as wreaths were laid by local groups and dignitaries.

Two minutes’ silence was held at exactly 11am followed by the playing of the Last Post by Ophelia Buckton, one of the members of the Burnham Marching Brass Band.

During the ceremony, members of King Alfred School read the names of those local soldiers who died in conflict during both the World Wars.

After prayers and readings from Rev Ken Brown, a former RAF Padre, the ceremony finished with the crowds singing the National Anthem.

Mayor Bill Hancock, pictured laying the Town Council’s wreath, told Burnham-On-Sea.com afterwards: “The town has done itself proud. It was such a wonderful turnout.”

He added: “I was especially pleased to so many young people taking part – hearing the names of our fallen soldiers from WW1 and WW2 read out by the King Alfred School pupils was a particularly special moment. The organisers are to be congratulated for such a successful event.”
