A huge WW1 memorial called the Poppy of Honour came to Burnham-On-Sea during a tour of Somerset on Tuesday (November 6th).
It contains the handwritten names of more than a million men and women who went missing or were killed during WW1.
The massive steel and glass memorial was officially unveiled in Wincanton during October after organisers spent years raising funds for the project.
It visited Burnham-On-Sea on Tuesday where it was located outside the Royal British Legion in Burnham’s Victoria Street ahead of this weekend’s Remembrance Sunday. It has now moved on to other Somerset towns.
A Legion spokesperson told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We were delighted to have the Poppy of Honour in Burnham and were pleased to see lots of interest in seeing it, from the Mayor and Mayoress, St Joseph’s School pupils and residents.”
Just days after celebrating its completion in a public ceremony, the glass front of the memorial was smashed by vandals, but a glass company has since repaired the damage to enable it to continue its tour.
It is making 19 stops around Somerset, before going on to visit other parts of the UK, the Republic of Ireland and Belgium.
