Burnham-On-Sea firefighters tackled a large fire involving tyres and dozens of silage bales on Monday afternoon (November 5th).

60 large silage bales and a large quantity of tyres went up in flames in the blaze near Axbridge, as pictured here.

A fire service spokesman said: “Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a large amount of smoke in the area at just before 1pm.”

“Due to the number of calls fire control mobilised one fire appliance from Cheddar, one from Burnham-On-Sea, one from Bridgwater and an Operational Assurance Officer.”

“Due to local knowledge of crews, whilst en-route they made up for a water bowser which was also sent from Bridgwater.”

“When the first crew booked in attendance they reported smoke and flames issuing from a large stack of tyres.”

“Crews got to work extinguishing the fire with one hose reel jet and one 45mm main jet.”

“At 2.04pm crews were making steady progress using two 45mm main jets, two breathing apparatus wearers and drag forks.”

“60 large silage bales, tyres and refuse were severely damaged by fire. Crews used four breathing apparatus wearers, a compressed air foam jet, three main jets, a ground monitor and a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.”
