Sandcastle building challenge beaten by the weather

A group of Venture Scouts who set out to build one of Burnham beach’s biggest sandcastles this week was beaten by the weather.

The Venture Scouts with their sandcastleOn what should have been a fine summer’s evening, the group of 20 teenagers from Mid-Sedgemoor Explorer Scouts gathered near the jetty with garden spades and shovels for the monumental task ahead.

But within minutes of starting the skies had darkened and they were given a soaking as heavy rain and thunder swept in.

Explorer Leader Mick White told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’d planned the evening several weeks ago and hadn’t counted on getting rain, thunder and lightning on a summer’s evening!”

He joked: “If the weather’s this good in the summer, our visit to the beach will have to become a bi-annual event!”

The Explorer Scouts meet every Tuesday evening at Burnham-On-Sea Scout HQ to take part in a range of activities including sailing, canoeing and abseiling.
