New sign warns of strong tidal currents on Burnham jetty
A new warning sign has been installed on Burnham’s jetty alerting visitors to the strong tidal currents in the area after two people were almost swept away by the fast flowing water last month.
The new sign (pictured) follows an incident in July when a lifeguard and eight-year-old boy were pulled under by the incoming tide at the end of the jetty.
Young holidaymaker Neil Carruthers had been washing mud from his legs when he slipped off the edge and got into difficulties.
A Burnham lifeguard who went to his rescue then also began to get fatigued in the fast-flowing water. As the pair were being pulled under, a second lifeguard raised the alarm and Burnham’s hovercraft – which was close by on training – flew to their aid.
Council bosses at Sedgemoor District Council hope the new sign will help to raise awareness of the risks and prevent similar incidents occurring.
