New seafront signs will warn nuisance drivers of vehicle seizures

Nuisance drivers who cause alarm, distress or annoyance to the general public along Burnham seafront risk having their vehicles seized by police officers.

That’s the stark warning featured on a set of new signs unveiled this week which are to be introduced on The Esplanade and in Somerfield’s Car Park later this year.

Under the plans, three sets of police signs will be installed along the seafront; six in total, measuring 60cm x 40cm.

A further four signs, two in Somerfield’s Car Park and one at each end of The Esplanade measuring 75cm x 50cm, will also be put up.

The high visibility warnings warn nuisance drivers: ‘Abuse It And Lose It. Careless or inconsiderate driving will not be tolerated in this area.’

The signs also point out that ‘Avon and Somerset Police have the power under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002 to seize vehicles being used to cause alarm, distress or annoyance.’

At its meeting this week, Burnham and Highbridge Town Council’s Town Improvements Commitee backed the proposals and earmarked £1,500 towards the project.

A date for the installation of the signs will be decided over the next few weeks, once discussions with police about the colour and exact wording are completed.
