Resident calls for improved public toilet facilities near Manor Gardens

A Burnham-On-Sea resident has called on councillors to improve public toilet facilities available in the town’s Manor Gardens, pictured above.

Mike Lang of Gloucester Road this week won the backing of Burnham town councillors after calling on Sedgemoor District Council bosses to improve the facilities at Pinnocks Croft at the back of Manor Gardens.

In an open letter to Sedgemoor District Council Chief Executive Kerry Rickard, Mike said: “On August Bank Holiday Monday, our charity group ran a stall at the annual hospital fete, and I was astounded to find that these toilets were not fully functional.”

“Furthermore, to reach the nearest available public toilets, one had to cross Berrow road, walk to and through a car park, then eventually through a narrow lane to reach toilets at the rear of Seaview road. This is not a satisfactory solution if you are elderly or a mother with young children.”

“While I recognise Sedgemoor District Council’s need to save money, I feel this is yet another example of their failure to recognize the needs of both Burnham-On-Sea ratepayers and holidaymakers alike.”

The issue was discussed at the latest Burnham Town Council meeting, where leader Peter Clayton said: “Mr Lang’s correct – this problem definitely needs to be addressed. I believe there is a sum of money available for such work that should enable Sedgemoor to do something here.”

And Burnham and Highbridge’s Mayor, Cllr Eric Gill, added his support, saying: “We’re all very much in accord on this.”

The council will feed back its comments to the district council in the coming days to press for changes.
