Huge fire sweeps through terrace of six homes in Highbridge

-

More than 50 firefighters from across Somerset tackled a huge blaze in six homes in Church Street, Highbridge on Friday (February 3rd).

A spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the fire was in a row of six, two-storey terraced houses with a combined attic space.

The alarm was received by the service at 9.03am, and a crew from Bridgwater fire station was mobilised to the incident.

After arriving at the incident it was clear that further services would be required and more crews were mobilised from Bridgwater and Street. At this point it was reported that the buildings were well alight.

As the incident continued, more crews were called in from Taunton, Cheddar, Glastonbury, Wells and Burnham-On-Sea fire stations.

The fire-fighting operation consisted of ten pumps in all.

At first, the fire was being fought by fire-fighters inside the building, but they had to withdraw because of a number of gas fires within the property.

The fire became severe on the first floor, and the fire crews began to concentrate their efforts here while continuing to contain the fire on the ground floor.

Additional breathing apparatus sets were brought in for the crews fighting the fire.

As the incident progressed, the fire spread into the roof space of the building, which the service then began to attack to try to prevent any spread across to other properties. This was attacked using fire fighters in breathing apparatus and three main jets.

Burnham-On-Sea Police were also present to take control of other issues, including traffic in the area, which came to a halt for several hours.

By 11.45am it was confirmed that the fire had been surrounded and the number of pumps at the incident could soon be reduced. A spokesman added that it was not clear what had caused the fire.

People throughout the area were evacuated during the incident and, fortunately, there were no injuries as a result.

The fire service did not leave the scene until 10.20pm on Friday evening when they were confident that the fire had been fully extinguished.
