New mini golf centre could open on Burnham-On-Sea seafront

A new mini golf complex could be opened on Burnham’s seafront this spring, according to proposals unveiled this week.

RG Entertainment – which currently runs the trampolines on Burnham Beach – wants to set up a nine-hole mini golf course on the tarmac seating area opposite Quantock Court to the south of the hovercraft station (pictured above).

Mini golfIn a statement to town and district planners, owner Robert Garland said: “Our view of the seafront is that it is pitched as a traditional seaside holiday operation providing family entertainment and healthy fun.”

“It is my view that the addition of a small crazy golf operation along the seafront will provide an additional all-weather family orientated entertainment that fits in well with what Burnham offers.”

He explained why the land opposite Quantock Court has been chosen: “It is a naturally walled area that provides a good self-enclosed area for the safe operation of crazy golf.”

“It is an area that has little use at present during the daytime and the giving up of the space will have little if any impact on other seafront users.”

The complex would consist of nine mobile golf holes that would be taken away each night and set up each morning to avoid vandalism.

It would operate between Easter and late September from 9am until 7pm each day and would cost approximately £1.50 for nine holes and £2.30 for 18 holes. A family ticket would also be offered for two adults and two children at £5 for nine holes.

Mr Garland is also keen to site three ‘A’ frame advertising boards along the seafront to promote the facility, although this part of the proposal was not welcomed by town councillors when they discussed the plans on Monday.

Cllr Louise Parkin said the advertising boards “would not be in line with the council’s current code of practice.”

She added that their introduction could introduce “ambiguity” between business and other facilities in the area.

A final decision on the proposals will rest with district planners and the operation could be in place as soon as April.
