Syringes and medicine bottles were found washed up along Berrow beach during a beach clean on Saturday (October 13th).
Over 25 local volunteers braved high winds and rain showers to join the latest litter clean organised by the Friends of Berrow Beach.
While the group focussed on removing plastic rubbish, they were shocked to find several syringes and medicine botles among the debris.
Litter Free Somerset’s Chloe Walker-Panse told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It is worrying to find items like these on our beaches and shows the importance of these beach cleans. These items could have been flushed down toilets or thrown into the sea.”
Volunteers also collected nurdles – small plastic pellets about the size of a lentil – which are created each year to make plastic products but end up getting washing up along the UK’s coastline.
The Berrow group is led by Honour Greenslade, Sue Meads and Tracie Philpott with the support of the Litter Free Coasts & Seas project.
