Tiny long-eared bat rescued from Highbridge car park

-

A bat will take to the skies again thanks to the treatment it received from Burnham-On-Sea wildlife rescuers.

Last week, Secret World Wildlife Rescue in East Huntspill admitted a brown long-eared bat which was found helpless on the ground in a car park in Highbridge.

Thanks to the quick reaction of employees from Eaton Control UK, a nearby company, the adult bat was transported back to Secret World’s centre by one of the charity’s volunteer response drivers.

Dee Cornish, from Eaton Control UK, explained: “It’s not every day you get to see a bat close up, let alone find one in your car park. My colleague Gary Wood observed and rescued the poor thing, cajoling it into a box.”

“Our first instinct was to get in touch with Secret World as we knew they would give it the best chance of survival.”

Although the bat was suffering from fatigue when it arrived at Secret World, it was in good overall health. Charity carers placed the bat in an enclosure for it to build up its strength before being released.

Katie Gibbs, Animal Carer at Secret World, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Without the eyes and ears of members of the public across the South West, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. This bat has had a lucky escape and was fortunately found in time before it was hit by a car.”

“Just one phone call to us can make all the difference. The bat will be released back into the wild as soon as it is fit and strong enough.”

All bat species, breeding sites and resting places are fully protected by law. The brown long-eared bat is one of the most common types of bats in the UK, unlike its grey long-eared cousin.

These bats’ large ears provide exceptionally sensitive hearing – it can hear a ladybird walking on a leaf.
