Coastguards
and RNLI search for 'missing person' under Burnham's pier

Burnham-On-Sea
Coastguards and crewmembers from the town's lifeboat crew conducted
a torch-lit search for a person that had reportedly become cut-off
by the incoming tide under the town's pier on Thursday evening
(October 2nd).
These
were the scenes at 10pm as the RNLI's shore crew, helped by torchlights
and the Puffin lifeboat a few metres offshore, searched around
the base of the pier with Coastguards.
A
member of the public had reported that several youths had been
playing with life-saving rings, normally installed on Burnham
Esplanade. The youths had apparently hidden on the sea wall underneath
the pavilion.
Several
inflatable buoys were retrieved, but no sight of any missing person
was found.
Burnham
Coastguard Officer Steve Bird told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "We
received a call from the town's police at 9.30pm that someone
had become cut off by the incoming tide underneath Burnham Pavilion."
"A
full search of the area was carred out but because the tide was
already in we were unable to search under the pier and therefore
requested the help of the lifeboat crew."
"No-one
was found, but the initial caller - who was on the pier at the
time - clearly had good intentions."
The
lifeboat was recovered at 10.27pm and returned to Burnham lifeboat
station for washing down and refuelling.
