889-day wait for away win is over for Burnham-On-Sea rugby team!

Burnham-On-Sea rugby club's first team players celebrated the end of their 889-day wait for an away victory as they beat Minehead Barbarians in a close match at the weekend.

The final score was Minehead 29, Burnham 31 after a tight game in which Minehead had led 17-16 at the break.

"This win meant so much to this team and it's long suffering travelling supporters," said the club's Lee Berry."

"It was 889 days since a 1st XV last tasted glory on the road. Thank you to all our supporters for the continued support. Well done to all players for the win."

He added: "The emotion was all too much for club captain Ross who broke down in tears after the game and told everyone he loved them."

Scores in the first half came from the boot of Tim Piper and Lee Vaughan's converted try. Second half scores from Tom Stevens and Josh Holder put Burnham ahead and a further Piper penalty increased the lead to 31-22.

Burnham had to defend a huge amount of late pressure and the Barbarians reduced the deficit through a penalty try. An infringement handed Burnham a penalty, which Piper cleared into touch to seal Burnham's first win away since April 2016.
