MP challenges decision to cut Highbridge Post Office opening hours

-

Highbridge’s MP James Heappey is to challenge a decision to reduce the opening hours at Highbridge Post Office, after it was saved from closure back in October 2017.

Following the resolution of a contractual issue, the Post Office in Church Street has continued to open as usual, despite being on the brink of closure.

However, it has just been announced that the opening hours will be scaled back and it will be closed on Saturdays.

Mr Heappey said: “I am disappointed by the decision to reduce the opening hours at the Highbridge Post Office. Post Offices provide many vital services for the community and have become particularly important after recent bank branch closures in the area.”

“I will be writing to the Post Office to challenge the decision and to see what could be done to restore the previous opening hours.”

The post office currently has opening hours of 8am to 6pm from Monday to Friday and 8am to 2pm on Saturdays, however the Post Office has confirmed that the store’s opening hours will be cut by 16 hours a week.

A spokesman for the Post Office said: “We have been in discussion with the Postmaster and we have agreed to his request to reduce the opening hours of Highbridge Post Office. From February 12th, the new hours will be Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.”

Meanwhile, the vacancy for Highbridge Post Office is currently advertised on the Post Office’s website at www.runapostoffice.co.uk. Applications from potential retail partners interested in running the Post Office in Highbridge can be submitted.
