Berrow beach set to host kite festival this weekend for the first time

Colourful kites will fill the skies over Berrow beach this weekend when Beachside Holiday Park hosts a kite festival for the first time.

The organisers of Burnham-On-Sea's Kite Festival have teamed up with the holiday park to hold the event on Saturday June 2nd and Sunday 3rd, which will see hundreds of visitors launch their kites into the sky above the beach.

Saturday kicks off with crafters, stalls, displays and the 'Learn to Fly' area open from 10am. Parking is on the beach from 10am with races and competitions from 11am. The programme runs through to an illuminated Kite Display and live music from 8pm on Saturday evening. Sunday’s programme finishes at 5.30pm.

At Beachside Holiday Park, novice kite flyers can try out their skills in the ‘Learn to Fly’ area before making their way to the main display field.

Visitors will enjoy stalls, crafts, a bar and barbecue at the event as they fly their kites in the sunshine.

Team Flame, the UK Traction Kite Champions, are performing both days at this weekend's Kite Festival. There will also be Kite Buggy Racing and huge inflatable kites from Avon Kite Flyers.

Jane Macpherson, from organising group Burnham-On-Sea Events (BOS Events), said: "We want people to have the chance to try kiting for themselves and to teach those who come the safety rules for flying."

"We’ve been into our local schools doing workshops with the children making kites and there will be competitions for those who have practised and turn up with their kite to take part in the competitions."

The European buggy kite racing champions will be showing off their skills at a buggy kite racing course on the beach and UK National Sport Kite Team champions, Flame, will be doing demonstrations at an open arena.

There will also be live music and an illuminated kite display at 8pm on Saturday June 3rd.

There is limited free parking for club kiters joining in with the display programme and a traditional fish and chip super on Saturday night just before the illuminated kite display.

The Sundowner pub will provide live music all weekend and there is plenty of parking available on the beach (at a cost of £7.00 to Sedgemoor District Council).
