Ten years on from closure, Burnham-On-Sea job centre to stay empty

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s former job centre looks set to remain vacant until at least the end of this year, it has emerged this week — ten years after the facilities closed down.

The agent representing the owner of the site, Alder King, told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week that no new owner has been found.

An Alder King spokeswoman said: “There has been recent interest in this site from possible commercial users, but nothing further.”

The building, at the junction of the High Street and Regent Street, has been vacant since the former job centre closed in March 2008.

The Department for Work and Pensions vacated it on 31st January 2009 and handed the building over to Telereal Trillium.

The lease for the premises expires on 31st December 2018. Although the lease is still in the name of the Secretary of State, it is ‘virtually assigned’ to Telereal Trillium.

The site could ultimately be redeveloped with government Coastal Community Fund cash as part of a regeneration project, as Burnham-On-Sea.com recently reported here.
