Balfour wins Hinkley Point C cable contract near Burnham-On-Sea

-

Balfour Beatty has secured a deal with National Grid to provide electrical cabling at the Hinkley Point C nuclear plant near Burnham-On-Sea.

The contractor will deliver the cabling works contract to connect the power station’s new reactor to the grid.

Balfour will design, supply and construct a 8.5 km-long 400 kV cable from Hinkley to a new substation in Sandford, north Somerset.

Enabling works have already begun on the package of works, which will employ around 90 people at peak.

The job is scheduled to complete before Hinkley’s first reactor unit is commissioned in 2025.

Balfour Beatty chief executive for rail and utilities Mark Bullock said: “This award demonstrates our ability to deliver a combined specialist cabling and civils package to ensure the Hinkley Point C connection works are delivered on time.”

In August last year Balfour replaced Costain on the four-year contract to build Hinkley Point C’s cooling system – a package worth around £200m.

The four-year job will deliver three 7-metre-diameter tunnels beneath the surrounding area both onshore and offshore.

Hinkley developer EDF said last month delays to its £9.8bn nuclear plant in northern France would have no impact on Hinkley Point C’s construction timeline.
