Crackdown on under-age gambling starts in Burnham-On-Sea area

Pubs, clubs and bars in the Burnham-On-Sea, Highbridge, Brean and Berrow area are being inspected in a crackdown on under-age gambling.

Sedgemoor District Council's Licensing Team and the Gambling Commission have begun a series of checks to ensure that laws on the use of gambling machines are being adhered.

Claire Faun, spokeswoman for the council, told "With safeguarding of children in mind, along with the summer tourist season, Sedgemoor District Council’s Licensing Team have teamed up with a colleague from the Gambling Commission to begin a programme of visits to premises licensed for the retail sale and supply of alcohol, such as pubs, clubs and bars, with a view to monitoring the use of gaming machines."

"The officers are reminding all licence holders of their responsibility for the safe and lawful use of machines within their businesses."

The unannounced visits began in the Brean area last Thursday (21st June) and are set to continue in coming days.

"They will make licence holders aware of the regulatory requirements, including awareness of the Gambling Commission’s code of practice with regards to gaming machines in alcohol licensed premises."
