Beach clean-up campaign grows as new Berrow group is formed

-

A brand new group is being formed in Berrow to keep the beach free of litter with the aim of repeating the success of Burnham-On-Sea’s beach cleaning group.

The Friends of Berrow Beach will meet for the first time on Saturday March 10th, when helpers will be sought to clean the village’s beach ahead of the start of the Easter holiday season.

The group intends to meet monthly, collecting plastic rubbish washed up along the beach.

The new group will gather for the first time on March 10th, from 10am-12 noon, meeting at Berrow Church when volunteers will be welcomed.

The Berrow group is being led by Honour Greenslade, Sue Meads and Tracie Philpott with the supported of Coastal Community Officer Tanya Cox.

Honour, pictured with Tanya, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Litter is just as much a problem on Berrow beach as it is in Burnham – litter doesn’t know any boundaries. After the recent storms a lot of debris was washed up which we’d like to remove.”

She added that the Co-Op in Berrow and Boots in Burnham have already pledged their support, giving supplies and first aid kits to the new group.

Tanya, from the Litter Free Coasts & Seas Somerset project, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s fantastic that a second group is being set up in Berrow to remove litter there too and thank the residents for coming forward to create it. We’d like to see a third group formed in Brean in the future too.”

Meanwhile, the next beach clean in Burnham-On-Sea will be held on Saturday March 3rd at 10am, meeting at Burnham-On-Sea Sailing Club.
