Could you become a Burnham-On-Sea firefighter? Recruitment begins

-

Burnham-On-Sea Fire Station is recruiting for new firefighters and is appealing to local people to consider coming forward.

The station in Marine Drive is seeking a number of individuals to join its team of both male and female firefighters, predominantly individuals that are available during the daytime on weekdays who live or work within five minutes of the station.

“Two contracts are available, either 64 or 84 hours, and if you’re employed some employers may release you for duties during your working day. If you’re self-employed it works well alongside your core business,” says a spokesman.

“As a retained firefighter you’re not expected to always be on call but to achieve those hours during the core hours you’ve applied for.”

“We have a system where you can ‘book off’ call should things crop up or you have planned events or holidays.”

“Even when you’re ‘on-call’ you can carry on with life, within 5 minutes of the station until the pagers sound.”

“Yes, you could be shopping or showering but that makes it more challenging! We have a weekly drill on Wednesdays, 7-9pm, where we train as a team and you would be expected to attend these.”

“Burnham-On-Sea station is quite a unique and busy station, attending 300+ shouts a year, although you wouldn’t attend all of them, across a diverse patch with a range of potential risks; the Estuary, Motorway, Tourism, Commercial and Domestic Incidents.”

Recruitment days are being planned for the future but if you can meet the person specification then you can start to apply now by following the link here.
