Burnham-On-Sea fire crews save dog from Highbridge house blaze

-

Burnham-On-Sea firefighters rescued a labrador dog while tackling a house blaze in Highbridge last night (Wednesday).

Three fire crews were sent to West Avenue in Highbridge just after 10pm following reports of flames being seen inside.

Crews rescued the labrador, called Lucy, and tackled the blaze with a hose reel jet, preventing it from spreading from the ground floor.

Neighbour Kayleigh Youde, who raised the alarm, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I smelt burning and heard Lucy barking inside, then I saw the flames inside the house through the kitchen window.”

“I immediately dialled 999 and was so relieved when the fire crews quickly arrived – they smashed the door to gain entry, brought out Lucy, and then put out the fire. Fortunately, no-one else was inside the house at the time.”

“It all happened so quickly. I’m so pleased no-one was hurt and that the fire didn’t spread.”

A fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Two appliances from Burnham-On-Sea and one from Bridgwater were mobilised to a report from a neighbour of fire alarms activating in a neighbouring property. On investigation, smoke was seen inside the and the fire service were called at 10.06pm.”

“On arrival at the scene crew confirmed all persons were accounted for and a fire was located in the kitchen.”

“At 10.18pm, the crew gained entry to the property using breaking-in tools and got to work with breathing apparatus, hose reels and a thermal image camera to extinguish the fire.”

“By 10:28pm, the fire in the kitchen had been extinguished and one dog was evacuated from the premises by the fire crew, who were at work ventilating the property using a positive pressure fan.”

At 11pm, the crew said the kitchen was smoke damaged, while there was also five percent smoke damage made to the remainder of the premises.

“The fire was extinguished using two breathing apparatus, one hose reel, a positive pressure ventilation fan and breaking-in tools.”
