The poor condition of Burnham-On-Sea’s beach has been criticised this week by holidaymakers.

A series of high summer tides has washed large amounts of sand away from around the Pavilion and parts of Burnham’s main beach, exposing rocks and wartime debris underneath, as pictured here.

Reader Kerrie Pepperd told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “You need to sort your beach out – it’s very dangerous for kids as well as adults.”

“I think it needs sorted before someone get badly hurt. We took the kids there to have a nice family walk along the sand and found it’s very dangerous with smashed glass, sharp metal, mud and car wheels.”

“I would of thought after a recent accident that happened a few weeks ago with an 11-year-old cutting her foot really badly on broken glass, it might have been sorted out. Hopefully it will get sorted before something serious happens.”

Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Unfortunately, the very high tides this week have exposed rocks and metal structures from the war which will be covered once ‘normal’ tides resume.”

“We litter pick the beach on a daily basis, but some of these objects are more or less immovable. Additionally, much of the debris is washed up with the tides, but it is also taken away on tides. I am afraid we have to work with Nature when it comes to this sort of issue.”
