Burnham-On-Sea beach clean finds 1996 crisp packet among litter

A 22 year-old crisp packet was among the rubbish collected by the volunteers from the Friends of Burnham-On-Sea Beach during their latest clean-up on Saturday (June 9th).

The group of around 30 helpers cleared the river banks along the Brue and the beach around Burnham sailing club where litter collects.

Tanya Cox, the Litter Free Coast and Sea Coastal Officer in Somerset, pictured above, said: "Among the rubbish we recovered was a Walkers crisp packet partly buried in the earth along the riber bank with a sell-by date of 1996."

"Its foil and plastic packaging was still fully intact, demonstrating how long it takes to a lot of plastic waste to degrade that goes to landfill."

Organisers thanked all those who had taken part - and those who had also joined the separate clean-up on Berrow beach during the day.

The Friends of Burnham Beach was launched in September 2016 and has since undertaken 18 cleans over that time.
