Highbridge’s Co-op supermarket is to set to shut down this autumn, it has been confirmed this week.

The supermarket in Southwell Crescent will close on October 27th with the loss of several jobs at the long-running store.

Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, a spokesperson for the Co-op said: “I can confirm that our Highbridge store will close, with the last day of trading expected to be 27th October.”

“The Co-op is moving forward with a real purpose and momentum and, while this often involves the opening of new stores, we sometimes have to take difficult decisions. The decision to close any store is not taken lightly.”

“The decision is in no way a reflection on the hard work and commitment of colleagues, who have been informed. We would like to thank the community for its support over the years.”

Meanwhile, a group of the Co-op, the Radstock Co-Operative Society, is still pushing ahead with its plans for a new convenience store in Highbridge’s Morland Road, as we first reported here. The new store was due to open this summer but its opening has been postponed.
