Burnham-On-Sea tourist information centre saw 22,000 summer visitors

Over 22,000 people visited Burnham-On-Sea’s tourist information centre over the summer holidays during one of the busiest seasons since the facilities opened seven years ago.

The seafront centre, run by community group BIARS (Burnham Information and Rescue Support), welcomed 22,706 visitors between the start of June and the end of September, according to its footfall counter.

"It has been another busy year for our volunteers," Chairman Tom Ashton told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

"The visitor numbers were again strong, around the same as last year, and were helped by the warm weather at the start of the holidays and the large number of people taking breaks in the UK."

A team of 40 volunteers runs the centre, with daily opening hours of 10am-4pm until the week after carnival when winter hours of 10am-2pm come into force.

Ian Jefferies, manager at the centre, added that income has been stable this year, with sales of souvenirs and postcards continuing to be popular alongside attraction tickets, Somerset DVDs, crafts and calendars.

Requests for travel information - local bus and rail timetables - are also among the most popular items for visitors.
