Over 50 sackfuls of plastic rubbish was collected by the volunteers from the Friends of Burnham-On-Sea Beach during their latest clean-up operation on Saturday morning (April 28th).

As well as cleaning the river banks along the Brue and the beach around Burnham sailing club, where litter collects, the group of 40 helpers cleared the banks along the estuary path.

Organiser Mark Hollidge, right, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We spent a lot of time on the bank that leads from the estuary path down to the Haven holiday park.”

“It’s clearly a long time since anyone has cleared the litter from this area judging by the amount found.”

“One of the discoveries was even a Somerfield’s carrier bag – the company has been out of business for over ten years!”

Mark added: “We are also still collecting a lot of cotton buds and quite a lot of discarded fishing paraphernalia.”

“We thank our 40 volunteers, including 10 people making their debut, who collected a vast amount of rubbish – over 50 sackfuls!”

The Friends of Burnham Beach was launched in September 2016 and has since undertaken 17 cleans over that time.
