Burnham-On-Sea’s Avenue Tennis Club holds centenary tournament

-

The Avenue Tennis Club recently hosted the 100th Burnham-On-Sea Open Tournament which was attended by players of all ages from around the country.

They included players from Herefordshire, Wiltshire, Surrey and Wales, as well as many from the West Country.

“Although the event has changed over the years from a family-centred tournament, when parents and children came to Burnham for a fortnight’s tennis holiday all playing in various events, to a prestigious LTA Grade 3 event catering mainly for junior players, it maintains a special relaxed atmosphere enjoyed by its many visitors,” said a spokeswoman.

“The number of entries has been increasing gradually over the past few years and it is now the second largest tournament in the South-West of England, refereed by one of the LTA’s senior officials,Graeme Luckin. The standard of tennis of all ages was extremely high, from under 8’s to over 70’s.”

The week was rounded off by a celebration hog roast attended by many past and present players and friends of the Avenue Club, including John Feaver whose grandfather was one of the founders of the club, the Feaver family having been constant friends of the Avenue ever since.

John was a Davis Cup Player for many years and has recently been selected to play for Great Britain’s over-65 team.

Other guests included Betty Norman, a long-time club member who is a previous over-40 Great Britain champion, and other past county players and officials who have supported the tournament over the years.

The Club welcomes new members of all ages and standards, from mini-tennis players to rusty racquets. Information on membership can be found at the club itself in The Grove, off Berrow Road, or on the club website.
